Chapter Eleven

Katherine

Katherine threw her body back on the bed with all her strength, kicking and thrashing like a child having a tantrum before falling flat on her back and out of breath. Still angry, she reached over for her pillow and covered her face to scream full force into the material. With some of the pent-up energy lost, she stared at the ceiling with burning eyes. Refusing to cry, she grabbed her cell phone and called Claire.

“Hey-o,” she said cheerily. Her voice was like a key, unlocking Katherine’s emotions and even though she hadn't planned it, she wailed, tears streaming down her face alarming her and Claire.

“Kat? Woah. What’s wrong, honey? Take a breath. I can’t understand you.”

It was too late. She just had to cry it out and bless Claire’s heart, she stayed on the line the entire five minutes it took Katherine to compose herself.

“I’m sorry,” Kat said sniffing.

“It’s all right. You got it out now. Which is good. So, talk to me. What’s going on?” Claire asked.

“He left me.”

“Dave?” Claire asked unassumingly, and Kat nodded. “Kat?” Claire pressed, and Kat remembered Claire couldn’t see her.

“Yeah. Dave,” she said hoarsely from the unexpected cry fest. “I told him I was a dragon and he called me a liar. Then he left.”

“Okay. Was anything else said in between that?” Claire said.

“Yeah,” she said not elaborating.

“Well, how did he sound?”

“Angry.”

“Angry like pissed or angry like betrayed?”

“A little of both. He accused me of sabotaging what we have.”

“Do you think he’s right?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“I think this is why we suggested you tell him you were a dragon before... you know, before he got attached.”

Kathrine could feel her frustration building. She didn’t choose this for herself. She didn’t ask to be a dragon, and even if she had the choice, she would choose to be one again. She couldn’t imagine there was anything better than being one. She’d always been a dragon. It was her entire life. She couldn’t know if she was missing anything by being a dragon instead of being human and she didn’t want to apologize for that. She shouldn’t have to. Not for a man. Not to be loved and to love in return.

“It’s not fair,” she said, squeezing her eyes closed. “I didn’t choose this and I can’t just tell every man I meet that I’m a dragon. That’s not safe.”

“I know, honey, I know, but you knew you wanted something more with Dave. When you knew that you should have started thinking of ways to let him know.” Not one to talk down to someone, Claire quickly added, “But what’s done is done, and now we have to figure out what’s next. So, do you still want him?”

Katherine already knew she did. If she didn't, she wouldn't be responding like this. She couldn't remember the last time she’d cried over a man. If she had to guess she would have said never or at the very least when she was a child, which was more than a century ago.
